Gynaecomastia

The growth of tissue and the build up of fat in the mammary area makes some men feel less masculine and ultimately, unhappy with their body. But the condition is easily treatable and Dr. Marcellino has restored self-confidence in many patients.

In a male client, real gynaecomastia is the pronounced development of the breast because of excess mammary tissue. Pseudogynaecomastia is the accumulation of fat in the mammary region. There are many causes but it’s generally due to high levels of hormones, liver problems, obesity or aging. Gynaecomastia in puberty is not treated and tends to disappear in adulthood.

Real and adipose gynaecomastia can be a very serious psychological problem for men, even when they are slim and it’s not only an aesthetic issue.

Gynaecomastia: the procedure

In most cases the treatment removes the excess tissue using liposuction. In around 20% of patients, gynecomastia is caused by a hypertrofic gland; in this cased, the excess gland is removed surgically. When both conditions are present, both surgical removal of the gland and liposuction are performed in one session.

Dr. Marcellino has a lot of experience in gynaecomastia treatment. The operation is done under general anaesthetic. It lasts about an hour and you can leave in the evening but usually you’ll have to rest for 3-4 days and you’ll have to wear a compression for 3 weeks. Stitches used to close the small incisions will be removed 8-10 days after the operation and there will be some swelling for a few weeks. Usually final results are clear at 3-4 weeks.
