Liposuction
Liposuction is an operation that allows to remove excess adipose tissue located in certain areas of the body without leaving scars on the skin. The most benefits are obtained when the adipose tissue is located in the outer thigh area, flanks/hips, abdominal area (when consistent of a build-up beneath the umbelicus), on the inner knees, under the chin. Liposuction is not meant for removing fat, but rather for modelling the body by "removing and leaving" in strategic points, and is hence called liposculpture.
Today there are numerous techniques that help the plastic surgeon: tumescent, UAL, PAD, to obtain more precise results and faster recovery times.
Liposuction is performed in an operating theatre and can be carried out in general anaesthesia, spinal anaesthesia, or in some cases in topical anaesthesia or epidural.
The operation consists in removing the excess adipose tissue; the latter is obtained by a pipe that is connected to a vacuum machine; the pipe is placed in the fat under the skin through a small incision in the proximity of the area to correct; the pipe is then pushed through the fat until it reaches the interested area. At this point the excess fat is pulverized by certain movements of the pipe and contemporarily sucked up. During these manoeuvres along with the pulverization of the fat many blood vessels are broken. The broken blood vessels release a certain quantity of blood in the surrounding tissues and this is the reason for the bruising after the operation and the reason why you are given an elastic garment to wear for a month. They reabsorb in 15 days.
The patient will have to stay in bed the day of the operation and will be able to get up and be dismissed the following day. One of the possible complications of liposuction is temporary compromisation of the lymphatic circulation in the operated area which may lead to swelling. The latter is all solved spontaneously with massages in more or less 2 months. Small bumps or irregularities in the skin may remain after the operation.
