Liposuction

Liposuction, or lipoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure to remove fat from targeted sites within the body. Dr. Marcellino is a pioneer of this technique having started using it in London back in 2007. Vaser Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery technique for removing excess fat from under the skin using ultrasounds delivered to target specifically the fat cells.

A thin tube is inserted into the area being treated and the fat is removed via suction. Liposuction can be targeted at specific areas of the body and has the advantage over more invasive surgery that it does not leave any visible scars on the skin.

Liposuction is not meant to be a means of removing all fat from the body, but rather for remodelling it by “removing and leaving” it in strategic points, hence it is often referred to by its alternative name ‘liposculpture’. The procedure typically takes between one and two hours to perform. The best results from liposuction are normally obtained where the fat deposits are located in:

  • the thigh areas.
  • the flanks/hips.
  • 360 degrees legs
  • the abdominal area
  • on the inner knees.
  • under the chin.
  • the arms
  • back and upper back

Luposuction: The Advantages

  • Minimize tissue trauma
  • Low to minimal pain, bruising , swelling
  • Precise contouring in sensitive areas

 Liposuction: The procedure

The procedure involves removing the excess tissue through a pipe that is connected to a vacuum machine. The pipe is placed in the fat through a small incision underneath the skin. The pipe is then pushed through the fat until it reaches the targeted area. The excess fat is then pulverised and sucked up.

After the liposuction is complete the incision is closed with a stitch or dissolvable suture. Liposuction can be carried out under general anaesthesia, spinal anaesthesia or, in some cases, using topical anaesthesia or epidural. Dr Marcellino will discuss which will apply to your treatment at your consultation. In most cases you will need to stay in hospital overnight.

Liposuction: Before Your Surgery

  • If you smoke it is strongly recommend that you stop at least two weeks prior to your surgery in order to help healing and reduce the risk of infection. Ideally you should stop 8 weeks beforehand.
  • If you take aspirin or any other medication you should make Dr. Marcellino aware of this at your consultation as it may need to be discontinued for a short period of time before and after your procedure.
  • With general anaesthetic you will be asked to follow fasting instructions. This means not eating or drinking for around six hours before the operation. Both Dr. Marcellino and your anaesthetist will provide precise advice on this in advance of your procedure.
  • You may be advised to lose weight prior to your surgery to achieve optimum results.

Liposuction: On the Day of Your Surgery

  • Please ensure that you arrive at the hospital in good time ahead of your operation.
  • Mr Marcellino will visit you in your room prior to your procedure, marking the targeted areas with a pen, also affording you the opportunity to ask any last minute questions you might have. A final consent form will also need to be signed at this point.
  • A personal nurse will be assigned to you to ensure your care and comfort throughout.

Liposuction: After Your Surgery

  • Some bruising will occur after the procedure as blood vessels are broken during the process. This is only temporary, however, and will normally disappear in around 15 days.
  • Painkillers will also be made available to manage any discomfort you feel in the days following your operation.
  • You will be provided with an elastic garment to assist your recovery which we advise you to wear for a month.
  • You will have to stay in bed the day of the operation but you’ll be able to get up and leave hospital the following day.
  • Mr Marcellino generally recommends taking a week off work following your procedure.
  • A post-operative appointment will be made for you with Mr Marcellino seven days after your surgery. It is very important that you attend.

 What to Consider

  • With any cosmetic procedure it is important that you carefully consider your decision and what it is you would like to achieve from your treatment.
  • Liposuction should certainly not be viewed as an alternative to losing weight through diet and exercise, and ideally you will have adhered to a healthy programme before contemplating the procedure.
  • Please also note that it is equally important that following the procedure you maintain a good diet and exercise regime.
  • There are also some potential risks and complications to consider. Mr Marcellino will discuss these with you at your consultation, addressing any questions or particular concerns you may have.
  • Some thought should also be given to practical considerations such as child care provision in the days after your operation, which should ideally be set aside for rest and recovery.
